Students 2 Science (S2S) is dedicated to supporting educators in improving scientific literacy and in providing relevant, hands-on STEM education to our youth. We do so by providing students with authentic STEM experience in a state-of- the-art laboratory, complete with modern instrumentation and professional scientists. Teams of students, working collaboratively with scientific professionals who serve as role models, solve real life problems while being introduced to a wide variety of 21st century STEM career opportunities. Additionally, we offer remote, web-based virtual STEM experience that eliminates geographic and language constraints and broadens our reach to serve a wider audience. We also support educators by increasing both their knowledge and confidence, while providing them with materials that are turn-key and well-designed so that they can replicate the experiment repeatedly, impacting an increased number of students.  

We have developed three innovative programs for accomplishing our mission:

  • The ISAAC (Improving Student Affinity and Aptitude for Careers in STEM) program provides students in middle and high schools with a rare opportunity to become immersed in an authentic laboratory environment and investigate real-world STEM problems. STEM professionals and volunteer scientists from the community and local corporations serve as Assistant Instructors and role models and accompany each group of students as they participate in these programs.
  • The Virtual Laboratory (V-Lab) program is a distance-learning, supplementary education experience that supports teachers in the classroom – it removes the barriers of geography and travel, bringing high-quality science and content experts directly into classrooms or non-traditional educational settings. Using state-of- the-art technology, the V-Lab program enables students in classrooms (as well as after-school programs, camps and other settings) and the Students 2 Science Technology Centers to simultaneously conduct a series of challenging, age-appropriate, hands-on science experiments.
  • As part of S2S’ offerings, teachers have access to a catalog of professional development (PD) opportunities. They may earn up to 6 hours of PD for each ISAAC session and further build their capacity to teach lab sciences. Teachers who participate in V-Lab may earn job-embedded PD and earn 1 hour of PD for each unique V-Lab experiment. Prior to each V-Lab session, teachers are provided with instructional resources, including lesson plans and “How-to Video” for every experiment, to increase teacher confidence in the subject matter and support their efforts to provide students with additional problem-and project-based learning. All content is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards.
