• We provide our young people with 21st century career readiness skills. Through our ISAAC and V-Lab programs, they perform hands-on, rigorous, project-based experiments that reflect real-world and contemporary issues and are introduced to professional role models and instructors who share their own journeys, as well as their enthusiasm for careers in STEM.
  • For our schools, we offer programs that provide hands-on STEM experiences while meeting curriculum requirements. A special challenge facing school districts in New Jersey and across the nation are the new science standards aka Next Generation Science Standards. S2S assists our schools with compliance to these standards by offering a curriculum that promotes or relates to career opportunities; educating via hands-on experiments that use inquiry-based, research-driven methods; and assisting teachers in their classrooms to meet the new standards and training them on the use of hands-on science experiments.
  • We support teachers by increasing both their knowledge and confidence, while providing them with materials that are turn-key and well-designed so that the teachers (who may or may not be content experts) can replicate the experiment repeatedly, impacting an increased number of students following the initial session.
  • S2S is made possible by the generous contributions of its many volunteers. STEM professionals from the community and local corporations volunteer to work side-by-side with our young students providing them with support, inspiration, motivation and career advice. Our volunteers come from many sources, practicing STEM Professionals, retired scientists and scientists-in-transition, teachers, interested community leaders and STEM advocates.

Economic Benefits and Growth/ Empowering Individuals: At Students 2 Science (S2S), we are addressing the national STEM crisis by introducing students to authentic, hands-on STEM laboratory experiences and by giving them the opportunity to interact with professional scientists who serve as role models and mentors.


The Students 2 Science (S2S) Theory of Change: A National Model

  • In order for our nation to compete in a global economy we need to increase the number of students who graduate from college and pursue STEM careers. Beginning STEM exposure in elementary school is critical to the long term success of our students.
  • STEM education programs in the country are dramatically under-resourced, particularly in communities of poverty.
  • According to the National Science Board, test scores for U.S. students in STEM subjects drop rapidly after 8th grade. By the end of 12th grade, our students' proficiency in STEM subjects is below the average of other industrialized nations.
  • S2S’s ISAAC (Improving Student Affinity and Aptitude for Careers in STEM) program inspires, motivates, and educates middle school students to pursue STEM in high school and learn through career exploration and project-based learning.
  • 90% of high school students surveyed expressed interest in STEM. Our objective is to make career alternatives and their earning potential clear, so students continue on the path to receive STEM certificates and post-secondary degrees in STEM fields.
  • S2S’s Virtual Laboratory (V-Lab) program is designed to meet our ISAAC objectives, while shifting needed support to educators by providing professional development and technical assistance to elementary, middle and high school teachers.

In its seven years of operation, S2S has evolved to meet the needs of many constituents, including students, teachers, schools, volunteers, sponsors/donors and our strategic partners.


We have developed three innovative programs for accomplishing our mission:

  • The ISAAC (Improving Student Affinity and Aptitude for Careers in STEM) program offers middle and high school students the opportunity to take part in multiple visits to the S2S Technology Center for more than 20 hours of practical skills development. They are provided with hands-on access to sophisticated instrumentation and work side-by-side with STEM professionals and volunteer scientists, conducting rigorous, age-appropriate experiments designed to reinforce Next Generation Science Standards.
  • The Virtual Laboratory (V-Lab) program removes the barriers of geography and travel, bringing high-quality science and content experts directly into classrooms or non-traditional educational settings. State-of-the-art distance-learning technology and the capacity to provide real-time interpretation in more than 200 languages means S2S is no longer limited to those students, teachers, and volunteers who reside within commuting distance of the Technology Center in East Hanover. V-Lab gives us the means to expand our services nationally and globally, and to significantly impact the lives of tens of thousands more students.
  • The Teacher Professional Development services provide teachers with opportunities to observe and/or serve as Assistant Instructors in the ISAAC program. Just one day at the laboratory can serve as 6 hours towards professional development for the year. S2S programs demonstrate Next Generation Science Standards and promote problem- and project-based learning, providing teachers with increased confidence and technical assistance. Over the next two years, S2S will roll out a teachers’ boot-camp via the V-Lab program.
